Why trust your eyes to anyone else?

Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital has Played a Pivotal Role in the Advancement of Eye Care

More than 2.3 million Americans undergo cataract surgery each year, making it the most frequently performed operation in the U.S.  Nearly all are candidates for small incision ultrasound cataract surgery, today’s gold standard of care, and one of many important innovations developed at the world-renowned Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital (MEETH).

One of the oldest and most comprehensive ophthalmology centers in the world, MEETH has played a leading role in the development of many critical advances in eye care, from sophisticated diagnostic tools to treatments for potentially devastating diseases.  The hospital also has a long history of training ophthalmology residents and fellows, including many who have become national and world leaders in their area of expertise.  Since 1999, MEETH has been the primary ophthalmology residency training site for New York University School of Medicine.

As a specialty hospital devoted to diagnosing and treating diseases of the eye, MEETH has “super” specialists in every area of ophthalmology, including nearsightedness and cataracts, “crossed” eyes, “wandering” eye, glaucoma, retinal disorders, external disease and infections, ophthalmic plastic surgery, ocular tumors, corneal transplants and neurologically based disorders.  Patients of all ages, from infants to seniors, benefit from the collective training and experience of some of the nation’s premier ophthalmologists.

Focus on the Front of the Eye:
Jack Dodick, MD, Chairman of Ophthalmology, is a World Leader in cataract and refractive surgery.  Among other achievements, he has developed several instruments to facilitate cataract surgery, including the first laser system for the removal of cataracts through a 1.2 mm incision.  Dr. Dodick is also Professor and Chairman of
Ophthalmology at New York University Medical Center.

The Back of the Eye is His Domain:
Retinal specialist, Lawrence Yannuzzi, MD, Vice Chairman of Ophthalmology, is widely recognized for his contributions in the areas of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and unusual chorioretinal diseases.  A recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Dr, Yannuzzi is founder and Director of the LuEsther T. Mertz Retinal Research Center and Founder of The Macula Foundation, Inc. both headquartered at MEETH.  Under his leadership, The Macula Foundation has distributed $22 million to support research nationwide.
